The Bazaruto Archipelago is an attractive adventure yacht charter holiday destination with five islands (Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina and Bangue off the south coast of Mozambique.

The best time to explore Bazaruto by boat is between May and November. You will cruise from Vilanculos or Inhassoro to one of the largest National Marine Parks and Conservation Areas off the coast of East Africa. The Bazaruto Archipelago has gained a reputation as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’ where sand dunes, tidal flats and crystal clear lagoon waters are to be found as the tide falls. The coral reefs are home to a wide variety of fish species and marine mammals. Vilanculos is nearby and, with its ruins, is well worth a visit.

The Quirimbas Archipelago consists of 31 islands stretching south from Cape Delgado off the coast of Mozambique. They include Ibo Island, Matemo, Medjumbe, Quirimba, Metundo, Quisiva, Vamizi and Rolas Island and the area runs up to the Tanzanian border.

The best time to sail in the Quirimbas islands is between May and November. The Quirimbas National Park is formed from the eleven most southerly islands. You will meet arrive at Pemba Airport, meet your crew and join your boat either at Pemba or Ibo Island. On a seven day charter you’ll have a wide choice of possible destinations. You will learn how to cast a fishing rod from the boat while cruising to the southern Quirimba islands. Then anchor off Quilalea island overnight and, next morning, set sail for Quisiva Island to visit the old fort. Continue to Ibo Island with its interesting history, Rolas Island and Matemo island with its holiday resort. After that cruise north to Medjumbe, a tiny tropical East African island.

Bassas Da India is an uninhabited and remote atoll in the middle of the southern Mozambique Channel which can only be seen at low tide.

Here is a 7-day itinerary sample for an East Africa yacht charter sailing Tanzania’s coast and islands. It can be changed according to weather conditions.

Set sail for the north coast of Tanzania between May and early December, when the trade winds blow from the southeast.
Start sailing from Dar es Salaam. Stopover at Lazy Lagoon Island, in the south of Bagamoyo, a significant historic town on the coast of East Africa. Sail on and anchor to the south of the Wami River at high tide. Then, go on a guided wildlife safari to Saadani Natural Park, the only one that borders the Indian Ocean. Continue sailing to the Maziwe Island Marine Reserve, which is about five miles southeast of Pangani. It is a historic town located at the mouth of the Pangani River. Head for Tanga Island, a small, uninhabited island in Tanzania. Sail a few miles north and disembark at Tanga City.

Plan a sailing trip to the south coast of Tanzania between November and May, when the trade winds blow from the northeast.
Start your cruise from Hendwa Beach or from Nungui Beach in the north of Zanzibar. Explore Saadani National Park. Sail into a quiet anchorage in Dar es Salaam. Set off to Buyuni Bay and snorkel the coral reefs. Make your way to Sukuti Island and take a boat ride inside the mangrove forest to watch the marine life. Depart for Mafia Island Marine Park, a pristine wildlife sanctuary. Pemba Island remains an untouched wilderness just off the coast of Tanzania. Cruise along to the fabulous Songo Songo and Funjove Islands in East Africa. Set out to visit the ruins of the medieval palace-fort on Kilwa Kisiwani island. Sail back to Mafia Island, where you can catch a flight home.

The boat handling is controlled from the flybridge helm station. You can relax and sunbathe on the foredeck area.

The interior is airy and air-conditioned. The well-arranged main lounge opens onto the cushioned cockpit area, where delicious Tanzanian food and drinks are served.

The yacht equipment comprises a refrigerator with freezer, 220v outlets, a 230v converter, solar panels, a water maker and a fruit juicer.

On-board accommodation for six guests consists of one master cabin in the starboard hull and two double cabins in the port hull.

From the second week of August until the first week of December, you will sail from Pemba to St Lazarus Banks that lie off the Quirimbas Archipelago in Northern Mozambique.
